1. Identify birds sighted

Birdwatchers like to identify birds that they have seen.

Current solution

Consult a bird watching guide

Context

Either in the field or when you get home.

Issues

In the field:

  • book can be heavy, get wet, cause you to fumble
  • having your head in a book can detract you from enjoying the experience
  • normally have to sift through the birds of an entire country to find the ones you want

At home

  • need to rely on memory or photos to consult the guide for appearance, location
  • books get written n so that you can mark off the ones you've seen

Would be great if

  • you could , record the exact location of the sighting/s
  • easily record images and sounds and id notes along with the location
  • the identification could be automatic
  • you had a full list of the birds for an area to narrow down a search

Using the phone with the book

2. Create lists of birds sighted

Birdwatchers like to make lists of the birds they identify, to keep a record of all the birds they've seen and where they've seen them.

Current solution

Make a list in a notebook or on the computer

Context

Post-field trip - in the home, or hotel. Per field trip.

Issues

  • need to go through your book find each bird you've seen then add to the list
  • end up with lots of disparate lists, sometimes more than one for a single location
  • can't record photos or sounds in a notebook, same for a digital list
  • can't easily see compare your list to the complete list for a location
  • can't easily share lists

Would be great if

  • list was automatically created when a bird was sighted
  • lists for a location could be appended
  • photos, sound recordings and field notes could be attached to the list
  • you could see how many of the birds listed in an area you have and haven't seen, sort of like collecting all the objects on the level of a game
  • you could share or boast about how many birds you've seen on a field trip e.g. Facebook post 'Tory Grice was at Lamington National Park and saw 22 bird species - view the birds she sighted

Using the phone with the book

Build a native mobile app.

Responsive app would not be suitable because the app needs to be used in context e.g. in the field. It would be possible to have a desktop version that would be used for editing and sharing lists only, however realistically, this is beyond the scope of this project.

Scenario 1. Identify birds sighted

App design

  • record geolocation, timestamp and sound with single tap - twitch
  • have option to append voice notes and images following twitch
  • sighting will be automatically saved to the phone

Scenario 2. Create lists of birds sighted

App design

  • sightings will be sorted according to location and/or date
  • sightings will be able to be viewed and edited
  • lists will be able to be created
  • lists will be able to be shared via facebook
  • lists will be able to be exported to Google Drive
